Orthopaedic second opinion in Munich
You have been advised to have surgery and are unsure whether it is really necessary? At our private orthopaedic practice in Munich-Altperlach, Dr. Schettle reviews your findings and examines you in person. He takes the time to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the recommended treatment and possible alternatives with you. This gives you a medical assessment as a basis for your decision.
When is a second opinion useful?
A second opinion can help you put a diagnosis or treatment recommendation into perspective. Dr. Schettle discusses with you what speaks in favour of the recommended treatment, what disadvantages it may have and which alternatives may be an option for you.
Typical questions are:
- Is the recommended surgery on my knee, hip, shoulder or spine right for me?
- Does the previous diagnosis match my symptoms?
- What are the next steps if the treatment so far has done little to relieve my symptoms?
- What options do I have for having my symptoms treated without surgery?

Frequently asked questions about the second opinion
Which documents do I need?
Please bring any existing doctors' letters, the recommendation for surgery and your MRI or X-ray images with the corresponding radiology reports. When you book your appointment, we will clarify which documents are needed and how you can provide digital images. You can request a copy of your medical records from the practice treating you.
Can the second opinion confirm the recommendation for surgery?
Yes. The aim is an open assessment. If surgery is the best solution in your case, Dr. Schettle will tell you so.
Do I have to be treated by you afterwards?
No. The second opinion is intended to support your decision. Where and how you are treated is your own decision.
Who covers the costs?
We bill the second opinion privately. Whether and to what extent your private health insurance reimburses the costs depends on your insurance plan. It is best to clarify reimbursement with your insurer before the appointment. Patients with statutory health insurance can use the consultation as self-paying patients.
