Orthotic care in Munich

Orthoses and elastic supports are part of conservative orthopaedics, that is, treatment without surgery. Depending on the findings, they are intended to relieve, immobilise, guide or stabilise a joint. At our private practice in Munich-Altperlach, Dr. Schettle clarifies whether an aid is appropriate for you. For selection and fitting, we work together with the medical supply store in the same building.

Elastic supports and orthoses

Which aid is suitable depends on your injury or condition and on your requirements in everyday life and in sport.

Elastic supports

Elastic supports, for example for the knee or ankle, exert gentle pressure. They are intended to support the joint under load and stimulate the surrounding muscles.

Orthoses

Orthoses can stabilise, relieve or immobilise joints. Depending on the design, they guide or limit certain movements. The support you need depends on your injury or condition.

When is an orthosis an option?

An orthosis is usually one element of the treatment. Dr. Schettle determines which aid is appropriate, how it is adjusted and how long you should wear it.

Depending on the findings, an orthosis or elastic support may be an option, for example:

  • after acute injuries, such as to the ligaments of the knee or ankle
  • for an unstable joint
  • for osteoarthritis, to relieve the load on the joint
  • after surgery, for immobilisation or guidance
  • when returning to sport

Frequently asked questions about orthotic care

Will I get the orthosis straight away?

In cooperation with the Lückenotto medical supply store, the practice keeps a wide range of orthoses and elastic supports in stock, which can often be fitted straight away. If the suitable model is not available, the medical supply store orders it promptly.

How long do I have to wear the orthosis?

That depends on your injury or condition and on your progress. Dr. Schettle will discuss with you when and for how long you should wear the orthosis.

Does an orthosis weaken the muscles?

If a joint is immobilised for a longer period, the muscles may weaken. That is why targeted exercises and, if needed, physiotherapy are often part of the treatment.

Who covers the costs?

Whether and to what extent your health insurance covers the costs depends on the aid and on your insurance plan. The medical supply store will advise you on this.

Part of your treatment plan

Orthotic care complements the rest of your treatment. Depending on the findings, Dr. Schettle combines it with exercise, targeted training, physiotherapy and other conservative procedures.
